Hitless Rules for Super Mario 64
General Rules
- All runs must start on a new file.
- The run starts once you have control of Mario.
- Skipping the intro cutscene is allowed.
- Accidentally quitting to the main menu does not invalidate your run.
- All forms of BLJs, MIPS Clip, and any methods for circumventing a castle door or star requirement are banned, unless explicitly stated or required.
- Any accidental glitches that occur without affecting gameplay are acceptable (audio glitches, camera glitches, softlocks, etc).
- In the event where you are softlocked, a reset is allowed.
- The following glitches are considered minor glitches and are allowed:
- Using any advanced movement tech is allowed so long as it doesn’t break any other rules. This includes climbing up slopes with kicks, frame-walking, C^ hyperspeed, glitchy wall kicks, glitchy ledge grabs, etc.
- Using Mario’s slide kick on dangerous surfaces.
- Ground Pound clipping on enemies like Whomp, Whomp King, or Chain Chomp.
- Cannonless and Lakitu skip are allowed.
- The following glitches are considered major glitches and are banned:
- All forms of environmental and object-based clipping are banned. This includes clipping through walls, ceilings, terrain, etc. Examples of object-based clipping involve using objects like Bob-ombs, Chuckyas, Crates, Elevators, Penguins, to clip through surfaces.
- Cloning and any other form of object manipulation. This includes duplicating Moneybags in SL.
- Intentional use of upwarps/downwarps.
- Any other unlisted glitches are banned.
- Failing any of the cap stages, Wing Mario over the Rainbow, or Princess’ Secret Slide counts as a hit/death. Failing these is defined as “triggering the warp that takes you out of the level/area.”
- For the No Special Caps subcategory: Do not enter any cap stages. This subcategory does not exist when any cap is required (ex: 105-Star, 120-Star, All Bosses subcategory).
- For the All Bosses subcategory: Defeat all in-game bosses (a list can be found here). This subcategory does not exist when bosses are required (ex: 105-Star, 120-Star).
- Visual mods (such as skins) are allowed as long as it does not change gameplay.
- Modified ROMs and Everdrive/flash carts are banned.
- The run ends once the big star is collected after beating Bowser in Bowser in the Sky.
- Quitouts are only allowed:
- If they are not used to avoid taking a hit.
- If they are not used to prevent a death or damage.
- If you’ve aggroed an enemy that couldn’t hit/stagger you under any circumstances. (Example below)
- Quitouts are not allowed while you are underwater, even if you have the metal cap equipped.
Hitless Rules
- Beat the game without dying or taking a hit.
- A hit is defined by a loss of health and/or stagger caused by an enemy. This rule is still true while the metal cap is equipped.
- Being struck by player triggered traps is considered a hit (falling platforms inside the volcano of LLL, electric chests in JRB and DDD, boulders in HMC).
- Getting grabbed, launched, or blown away by enemies is considered a hit (Chuckyas, King Bob-omb, Heave-Hos, Fwoosh, Giant Snowman’s head).
- Environmental damage that causes Mario to bounce up is considered a hit (Lava, cold water under ice bully in SL).
- Static environmental damage does not count as a hit (HMC toxic gas, building torches that cause mario to run while on fire, SSL cold water that does not bounce you up, swimming underwater, etc).
- The tornadoes in SSL, much like the updraft winds in TTM and THI, are considered a tool that helps Mario and are not considered a hit.
- Taking fall damage is not considered a hit.
Damageless Rules
- Beat the game without dying or taking damage.
- Anything that visibly lowers Mario’s health meter by at least one segment is prohibited. The only exception is health lost from swimming underwater (non-“air” damage taken while in or under water still counts as damage, including from freezing water).
Hitless & Damageless Rules
- All of the Hitless & Damageless rules apply.
