Hitless Rules for The Binding of Isaac

General Rules
  • Playing on the Repentance DLC from a 100% file is highly recommended but not mandatory (you can download a “Dead God” file here).
  • An older version of the game (Vanilla or a previous DLC) with no full completion can still be used but only the categories shown above apply.
  • Submitting a seeded run is forbidden.
  • Showing the seed of the run (preferrably at the beginning, a couple of seconds in the menu are enough) is mandatory.
  • The run submissions must show these details: Difficulty, Character, Ending, additional restrictions and Marks completed (such as Boss Rush or Hush).
  • Runs must start from scratch. For example, starting with an extra item due to having collected Eden’s blessing in a previous run is not allowed (except for multi-runs, where it is only not allowed in the first one).
  • Restarting is allowed, as long as the rest of the rules are met (the seed you reset is also not part of the run), except for multi-runs.
  • Reducing your maximum health (that is, your number of heart containers) does not count as a hit, nor as damage (for example, by making a pact with the Devil, buying in the Black Market, or using items like “Experimental Treatment”).
  • Quitting and loading before completing a room to reset the enemies is not allowed.
  • Visual and music mods are allowed, as long as they follow the HUD recommendations and do not provide any advantage from an un-modded run (like making certain attacks or sound-effects more apparent than usual). Mods for color-blindness that change the color palette are allowed. Some description mods like External Item Description Mod and Planetarium Chance Mod are also allowed. Use of other unspecified mod types will invalidate the run.
  • The following major glitches are forbidden:
    • Getting an item that is about to disappear in the 4 frames it takes (also applies to duplicating it with Diplopia/Crooked Penny) while playing as a single character. Doing it in a coop run or while playing as Jacob and Esau is allowed.
    • Getting extra rewards from Lost Soul by using a voided Glowing Hourglass.
    • Underflowing the tear rate so you get max tear rate.
    • Getting to the I Am Error room by clipping through the walls (you can of course get to the I Am Error room by other means such as using Teleport 2.0).
  • Taking a “Hematemesis” pill does not count as a hit, nor as damage, however getting damaged by the explosions of Horf! or Explosive Diarrhea count as both a hit and damage.
  • A secondary character like Strawman or Soul of the Forgotten getting hit/damaged does not count as either hit or damage and does not invalidate a run. However, in co-op runs any of the players getting hit counts as a hit.
  • Pausing the game for any reason is always allowed as long as you don’t quit the game in an uncompleted room.
  • Items or consumables that give invincibility such as Book of Shadows, My Little Unicorn, Mega Mush, Rune of Algiz, etc. are allowed, and being invincible negates all hits and damage.
  • Items that sometimes negate damage such as Infamy or Cone Head are allowed and when the negation is successful it does not count as hit nor damage.
  • Running out of hearts with The Soul or The Forgotten with a Devil Deal, making only one part playable, is allowed.
  • Quitting out when a restock machine explodes is allowed as long as the room you are in is cleared.
  • For Victory Lap and Rerun runs, you have to complete and show footage of both the beginning run and the Rerun/Laps.
Specific Hitless Rules for The Binding of Isaac
  • A bite from a Bulb (the charged mosquito that drains your charges) does not count as a hit.
  • Holy Mantle and the Holy Card effects does not prevent from taking a hit.
  • Dying does not count as a hit as long as you have a revive, are in a completed room and use a self damage method (for example a sacrifice room) or do it on purpose (the room you are in is fully clear and you audibly state that you are going to get hit, or indicating it in-game by spinning around yourself in circles 3 times). You can also die in an uncompleted room if you use Plan C and have a revive.
  • Self-inflicted damage items or effects are allowed, as long as you don’t die to them (that includes donation machines, sacrifice rooms, Blood Oath, spiked chests, Tainted Maggy, etc). If you have doubts on what classifies as self damage, basically anything that does not lower deal chance and removes Perfection is self damage, and anything that lowers it and removes Perfection is a hit.
  • Enviromental damage like red poop, fireplaces or spiked rocks counts as a hit, unless the room you are in is fully clear and you audibly state that you are going to get hit (or indicating it in-game by spinning around yourself in circles 3 times before getting hit). For example, getting hit by your own bomb in order to trigger the Whore of Babylon effect is fine (if it was previously stated), but getting hit accidentally by your own Ipecac tear is not.
  • Taking a random pill with the “Bad Trip” effect does not count as a hit, but it does count as damage.
  • Getting broken hearts does not count as a hit.
  • Shard of Glass follows general rules, meaning that non-self damage counts as a hit but self damage does not.
  • Dark Esau turning a player into The Lost counts as a hit.
  • The Evis enemy grabbing you does not count as a hit.
Specific Damageless Rules for The Binding of Isaac
  • Anything that reduces your current health (either red or blue or any kind of heart) counts as damage, this includes broken hearts. The only exceptions to this are Devil Deals/Black Market and opening the Mausoleum door.
  • Dying is always allowed, except if it is due to your current health going down to zero. That means extra lives, items and consumables like “Plan C” or “Suicide King”, and dying to a Devil Deal are allowed.
